NZPFA Statement on Potential World Cup Sponsorship

3 February 2023

NZPFA is deeply concerned to hear the reports that FIFA is considering engaging the Saudi Arabian tourism authority as a sponsor of this year's World Cup which will be hosted by New Zealand and Australia.

New Zealand has a proud history of progressing women’s rights, working towards gender equality and promoting rights for members of the LGBTIQ community. The suggestion that a tournament hosted by New Zealand would be subject to an association of this nature undermines these powerful historic stances.

Football Ferns captain Ali Riley has said “These reports are distressing. We expect any major corporate partner of the World Cup to be able to demonstrate a commitment to the promotion of women’s rights and to have values which align with the players, who are the face of the tournament”.

The reports also highlight the need for meaningful consultation with players on important matters such as the appointment of major partners as well as a genuine commitment to a human rights framework from FIFA. Although it has adopted statements about human rights as part of its statutes and policy, FIFA has all too often demonstrated an ambivalence with respect to bringing these commitments to life.

Anna Green has said that “As the players union we will be engaging the Football Ferns to discuss these reports with them. We support the inquiry from New Zealand Football on this matter and will be working closely with them to understand more ”.
